Nasal cavity – blood supply

  • Sphenopalatine a.
    • largest branch of the 3rd part of the maxillary a. as it courses into the pterygopalatine fossa
    • bifurcates into septal and lateral nasal wall branches
    • courses with the nasopalatine n., a branch of V2
    • anastomoses anteriorly with branches from anterior and posterior ethmoidal aa. from ophthalmic a. in the orbit
    • anastomoses anterior-inferiorly with greater palatine a. (a branch of descending palatine a. from the maxillary a.) within the incisive foramen of the hard palate

Nasal cavity – innervation

  • V1 ophthalmic branch of trigeminal n. (GSA)
    • anterior ethmoidal branches course through ethmoidal air cells onto the lateral nasal wall and nasal septum
    • innervation to mucosae of superior nasal cavity
  • V2 maxillary branch of trigeminal n. (GSA)
    • nasopalatine n. courses with sphenopalatine a. to innervate mucosae of inferior nasal cavity
    • infraorbital n. gives off lateral nasal branches to alae of vestibule
  • VII facial n. (GVE)
    • parasympathetic innervation to mucosal seromucous glands of nasal sinuses
    • uses pterygopalatine ganglion as point of synapse

Nasal cavity – sinuses

  • Sphenoidal sinus
    • opens into the sphenoethmoidal recess superior to the superior nasal conchae
  • Frontal sinus
    • infundibulum connects to anterior portion of semilunar hiatus in the middle nasal meatus
  • Maxillary sinus
    • largest opening into the semilunar hiatus in the middle nasal meatus
  • Ethmoidal air cells
    • anterior cells open onto infundibulum of frontal sinus and flow into the semilunar hiatus in the middle nasal meatus
    • middle cells drain via many small openings onto the ethmoidal bulla within the middle nasal meatus
    • posterior cells open into the superior nasal meatus
  • Nasolacrimal sac
    • drains lacrimal secretions from eye into inferior nasal meatus
